I will be traveling for a few months and want to be able to make sure my valuables (laptop, passport, creditcards.ect) are secure in the hotel/motel room. Most concered about laptop.

I'd feel more secure locking them in the hotel/motel safe.

will they confiscate a small dvd player for watching movies, if you bring it in your carry on bag?

From personal experience, I know that you can bring it with you and you can use it during flight. You might not be able to use it during take off and landing. I travel with my grandkids and we always bring a DVD player.

Can I carry a portable hard disk in my carry on bag and the pen drives with me in my carry-on bag on an international flight? I have heard they make us switch on devices, but how can I connect the drives when I am not carrying any computer? And do hard disks count as a piece of baggage or can I place with other items in my carry on bag and it would be included as 1 bag? Also, is it safe to pass through metal detectors and get such disks and credit cards scanned with the XRAYs?

You can put them in your carry on. No problem. They will check them physically at security, but you don't have to turn them on.
